LINCOLN, Neb.
The Cornhusker, Lincoln's oldest and best-known hotel, finally may be headed toward stability after several years of upheaval.
Marcus Hotels & Resorts announced it plans to buy the hotel and its attached office plaza. Marcus, which owns or manages 18 hotels, mostly in the Midwest, plans to spend several million dollars on renovations at the Cornhusker and also bring back the Marriott brand, which was lost recently because of the financial problems of the hotel's former owner, Atul Bisaria. Marcus has been managing the hotel since early September under an agreement with LEM Capital, which repossessed the hotel early this year to settle a debt owed by Bisaria.
In addition to updating guest rooms and meeting spaces, and a reconfiguration of the lobby, the renovation will include a new restaurant for the hotel, the Miller Time Pub & Grill.
The planned renovation of The Cornhusker is similar to several other downtown hotel restorations Marcus has done, including The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, the Skirvin Hilton in Oklahoma City, and the Hotel Phillips in Kansas City, Mo.
