Maine Boutique Earns LEED Certification

PORTLAND, MAINE

Following its May 2015 opening, The Press Hotel, a member of Autograph Collection, announced its receipt of a LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

The Press Hotel is owned by local developer Jim Brady and operated by Trust Hospitality. Located at the corner of Exchange and Congress streets in the Old Port neighborhood, The Press Hotel opened on May 12, 2015, with interior design aptly inspired by its home in the historic Portland Press Herald newspaper building.

The Press Hotel achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

A landmark green hotel for Portland, Maine, The Press Hotel features a plethora of green building features to help the project meet its sustainability goals. Thornton Tomasetti was hired as the LEED Consultant to manage the certification process, recommend sustainable strategies, and optimize energy performance.

The hotel was designed by local Architect of Record, Archetype in collaboration with the interior design firm Stonehill & Taylor, and construction was managed by Wright-Ryan Construction.

The hotel’s design attributes and sustainability practices include: dual-flush toilets, operable windows, high-performance mechanical systems, building automation systems to control and monitor lighting and equipment, environmentally-conscious building materials and green operating policies.

“We are pleased to have achieved the LEED certification so promptly after our May opening,” General Manager Michael Strejcek said. “As we continue to strive for a reduced carbon footprint, The Press Hotel is fully committed to setting high goals and standards for our sustainability practices.”

Each of the hotel’s 110 guest rooms is inspired by a 1920s writer’s office, including a vintage-styled journalist desk. The hotel corridor wallpaper includes real quotes from Portland Press Herald pages and typewriter letter keys scatter across the corridor carpet.

Four private function rooms are available for groups and special events. The Press Hotel is home to UNION Restaurant, led by Executive Chef Josh Berry featuring enhanced local cuisine.
