Marriott International Acquires citizenM Hotel Brand for $355 Million

citizenM Menlo Park

Marriott International acquired the lifestyle hospitality brand citizenM, bringing the company’s 36 hotels and 8,544 rooms under the Marriott umbrella. Marriott hopes the transaction will accelerate its expansion into the select-service and lifestyle lodging options.

The citizenM properties are located in 20 cities throughout the U.S., Europe and the Asia Pacific, including New York, London, Paris, Rome and more. The brand’s current pipeline also includes three in-progress hotels that total over 600 rooms and are expected to be completed by mid-2026, which will also be acquired by Marriott under the agreement.

"We are very excited about our agreement with Marriott and look forward to this pivotal next step for our future growth,” said founder and chairman of citizenM, Rattan Chadha, in a press release announcing the acquisition. “I envisage this relationship will greatly enhance citizenM's global reach and brand impact. Marriott as an organization shares our values and culture, and I am confident in their deep commitment in continuing our brand’s DNA into the future.”

The citizenM brand was founded in 2008 and mainly caters to value-conscious travelers and is known for its technology-driven accommodations and focus on art and design. Many of the hotels offer smart in-room design, common spaces with immersive artwork and local artifacts, creative meeting rooms, grab-and-go food and beverage options and lively rooftop decks.

“We are thrilled to add citizenM as a unique, differentiated offering to our select-service brand portfolio as we continue to strengthen Marriott’s foothold in this valuable market segment around the world,” said Anthony Capuano, president and CEO of Marriott International. “Marriott has a proven track record of growing acquired brands significantly by leveraging our global development ecosystem, the benefits of our industry-leading affiliation cost structure, and the power of our award-winning Marriott Bonvoy loyalty platform.”

Assuming the $355 million transaction closes by the end of the year, Marriott expects its total net room count to grow by nearly 5% in 2025.
