Parts of Texas and Louisiana were hit especially hard by torrential rain and flash flooding over the weekend and into Monday as the after-effects of Hurricane Patricia in Mexico combined with a storm system that was already predicted for the area to cause problematic conditions.
Southeast Texas, including Houston and Galveston, was impacted by heavy rain, as well as areas of Louisiana that included Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Other Gulf Coast states have also been affected.
Reuters reported that about 22,000 people were left without power in the Greater New Orleans area over the weekend, while some streets were flooded, in addition to coastal flooding.
CNN reported on Sunday that in Houston all exits to downtown on I-45 were closed due to high water (I-45 was since reopened). And up to 20 inches of rain fell over parts of Texas in a few days’ time, with more rain expected later this week. Meanwhile, San Antonio broke its all-time single-day rain record on Saturday.
Multiple news outlets reported that even after the rain stops falling, creeks and rivers may continue to overflow and some flood warnings are set to last until late into the week.
