Georgia Gov. Vetoes Controversial Bill

ATLANTA

After receiving threats from the NFL and major U.S. corporations to pull business from Georgia, Gov. Nathan Deal announced on Monday, March 28, that he would veto a “religious liberty” bill that many saw as being discriminatory against Georgia’s LGBT community, among others.

According to CNN, House Bill 757 “would have given faith-based organizations in Georgia the option to deny services and jobs to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.” Those in support of the bill said it provided religious freedom, while those who opposed said it was anti-LGBT.

The bill contained language similar to a law that was passed in North Carolina last week, which the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority said is already hurting convention business.

More information and a video of Gov. Deal explaining why he vetoed the bill is available via CNN.
