MIAMI BEACH, Fla.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced on Friday, Dec. 9, that the South Beach area “has been cleared of active Zika transmission” according to an article from the Associated Press. However, tourism officials noted that the virus remains a risk in Miami-Dade County and isolated Zika infections are still under investigation.
The announcement arrives in time for South Beach’s busy winter season, when tourists flock to the area to escape the cold weather in other parts of the country and world. U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow released the following statement in response to Gov. Scott’s announcement:
"This is the update we've been awaiting for some time, one that reflects the dedicated, hard work Florida state officials have done to contain Zika,” Dow said. “I commend Gov. Scott and the Florida Department of Health for their attention to this issue, and for all of their initiatives to educate the public, spray for mosquitoes, and ensure citizens and travelers alike were protected” [See the full statement on the U.S. Travel website].
