Hawaii Marriott Strike Over

Hotel worker labor union UNITE HERE and hotel company Kyo-ya, which owns several hotels operated by Marriott in Hawaii, reached an agreement on a new union contract on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, ending a 51-day strike.

The new contract was ratified by a 99.6 percent vote by members of UNITE HERE Local 5.

The union and Kyo-ya released the following joint statements leading up to the contract ratification vote:

“We’re grateful for the solidarity of our fellow union members and the support of the entire community,” said UNITE HERE Local 5 President Gemma Weinstein.

“The new agreement meets the needs of our employees and Kyo-ya,” said the management of Kyo-ya.

“We look forward to welcoming them back and look forward to more years of working together to successfully provide world-class service to our guests," it continued. "We also want to thank the community for their patience and understanding throughout this process.”

The more than 2,700 workers had been on strike at five hotels: Sheraton Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian, Westin Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani and Sheraton Maui.

UNITE HERE spokesperson Rachel Gumpert added the following statement:

“UNITE HERE is thrilled with the bargaining progress made today that will make one job enough for 2,700 workers in Hawaii, and proud of the courage of our members,” Gumpert said.

“The Marriott strike continues still in San Francisco, where 2,500 workers have been on strike against Marriott for eight weeks fighting to turn their jobs at Marriott into positions they can support their families on," she added. "Negotiations [will] resume with Marriott in San Francisco on [Saturday, December 1].”

UNITE HERE Local 26 recently ended its strike against Marriott hotels in Boston following an agreement. Meanwhile, UNITE HERE Local 24 and UNITE HERE Local 2850 ended strikes in Detroit and Oakland.
