BILOXI, Miss.
Mississippi Coast casinos began recovering from the recession in spring 2010 and will likely continue on an upward trajectory for several more years, according to the annual State of the State report from the Mississippi Casino Operators Association.
According to a report in Biloxi’s The Sun Herald newspaper, casino revenue plummeted by half a billion dollars during the recession, which began locally in September 2008.
But following seven consecutive quarterly declines, the casinos lodged year-over-year increases in the last three quarters of 2010.
Casinos are a $2.39 billion industry in the state, which makes Mississippi the fifth-highest in the nation, following Nevada, New Jersey, Indiana and Pennsylvania.
Casino revenue in Mississippi dropped 17 percent since registering highs in 2007, the report said.
